Denver is known for its sunny days and clear blue skies. Denver's reality includes more shades of grey...and even burnt orange. Locally produced smog and wildfire smoke blown in from the west are persistent sources of haze throughout the year, but especially in the summer months.

The AQI (Air Quality Index) is the EPA's (Environmental Protection Agency) index for recording air quality. The index ranges from 0 to 500. The higher the value, the greater the level of pollution found in the air. Any value over 100 is considered unhealthy. On August 7, 2021, Denver's AQI reached 167, briefly ranking as the worst air quality in the world according to IQAir.

But when the AQI is low and the visibility of the foothills is clear, there is nothing better than spending time outside in Denver.
